Demo Competition rules

This time we decided to bring some freshness to your favourite party at the end of the year. During the last years we learned that tUM is not an event that brings a high amount of releases, since most people just come to party and chill with their scene friends. Therefore we want to make the compos more interesting for everyone by changing the categories and thus allowing more different platforms to be shown.

Nearly all existing platforms will be allowed as long as they fit in one of the categories. Wouldn't it be nice to see some cool ATARI stuff again? Do you agree, that a stylish AMiGA PPC demo can win over a PC demo? We say: "YES"!

For this reason we divided the demo and sizecoding competitions into different categories:

High-End Platform Competitions
Low-End Platform Competitions
Oldskool Platform Competitions

Compo Machines

  • Machines not listed here have to be brought along by the contributers to prove that the entry runs on the specific machine
  • Entries for machines we cannot provide have to be contributed as DIVX/XVID. If you don't know how to record your entry, we can help you. Please make sure to contact us soon enough, so we don't have to mess with our timetable.
  • We can provide the following compo machines:
    • C64 (6581 SID) and C64 II (8580 SID) with Retro Replay and one 1541-II Floppydrive
    • PSOne, PAL with Modchip
    • PS2, PAL with Modchip
    • Dreamcast, PAL and Japanese
    • PSP US, Firmware 1.50
    • Compo PCs:
      • We will have two compo PCs, both a Pentium 4 3.0GHz HT with 512MB RAM. One with an ATI Radeon x800 PRO with 128MB VRAM and one with at least a Geforce fx 5900 with 128mb VRAM. The latter one might change to some Geforce fx 6xxx card if we get our hands on one :) You may choose the preferred machine when submitting your entry via the composystem.
      • We will use Windows XP with Service Pack 2, DirectX 9.0c web install (NOT the latest sdk redist install). the latest ati and nvidia drivers will be used, check back for exact version numbers shortly before the party. msvcr??.dll will NOT be available on the system. We will NOT install any drivers or virtual machines to provide or improve DOS compatibility, don't expect anything more than Mode13h and nosound if you really dare to submit a DOS demo.
      • note on d3dx-issues: if you want to use the d3dx library, you either have to link it statically into your demo (december 2004-sdk and earlier) or submit the d3dx??.dll with your demo-zipfile (februar 2005 sdks and later). as of the june-sdk this is also ok with the d3d-licensing. the size of the d3dx.dll will count into the demo-size. this applies to ALL compos (also 64k and 4k, which most probably renders the usage of the d3dx-library impossible in those competitions)

High-End Platform Competitions

  • The entries have to be delivered as single .lzh or .zip file
  • To avoid issues with the beam-system, the maximum resolution is 1024 x 768
  • Installation routines are forbidden. Unpacking your contribution into a directory and starting the executable have to be the only things necessary to get your production to work.
  • all custom libraries have to be provided with your production and they have to reside in the same directory
  • Any custom libraries count into the filesize limit! Special note on d3dx-issues once again: The size of the d3dx.dll will count into the demo-size. This applies to ALL High-End Demo/Intro Compos. That includes 64k and 4k, which most probably renders usage of the d3dx-library impossible in those competitions.
  • pressing either the right mouse button or ESC has to end the demo instantly.
The following machines belong to the High-End Platform Competitions category:
  • Amiga PPC, Dreamcast, Gamecube, Macintosh, N64, PC, PS2, PSP, Xbox, Xbox 360
